Kentucky Derby Results: Biggest Surprises from 139th Running for the Roses

The Run for the Roses took higher than a few interesting converts, since the 2013 Kentucky Derby was saturated in surprises from Churchill Downs on Saturday. Orb, the consensus beloved entering the derby, lived around his nonsense by breezing through your competitors with a 2.5-length success, per ESPN. While an Orb win certainly wasn't a surprise, there were some big surprises from the Kentucky Derby earlier this weekend. Listed below are the three biggest things that stood out if you ask me. Kentucky Derby Results Verrazano Completes Near Straight back of the Pack Under the treatment of well-known coach Todd Pletcher and skilled jockey John Velazquez, Verrazano was allowed to be a legitimate competitor in the 2013 Kentucky Derby. In their power ratings entering the Run for the Roses, the inventors at the Daily Racing Forum had Verrazano as their No. 2 horse for the competition. Instead, the colt put a dismal 14th after being undefeated in four starts. Verrazano had 8-1 possibilities entering the race (via KentuckyDerby.com) but was never an issue in the race, beginning with the 14th post. Pletcher had a difficult day on Saturday, but nothing was more surprising compared to performance of Verrazano. Unbelievable Performance for Golden Soul Golden Soul entered the 2013 Kentucky Derby with 34-1 odds (via KentuckyDerby.com) and left Churchill downs placing second in the 139th Run for the Roses. What's therefore amazing about Golden Soul's setting on Saturday is he did it on a poor track. Fantastic Soul is known as a stretch runner, and so the muddy track wasn't of necessity an advantage for the colt on race day. Coming from behind, Golden Soul persevered through the inclement weather to make instructor Dallas Stewart and jockey Robby Albarado a second-place finish. After a fourth-place finish in the Louisiana Derby on Mar. 30, Golden Soul upped the ante and rewarded those strong enough to place their money down on the longshot. Todd Pletcher Horses Fail Entering the Run for the Roses, Todd Pletcher was placed to get success in the derby because of featuring five horses in the race. His prized horse, Verrazano, was the biggest frustration among Pletcher-trained colts, as he concluded 14th after authorities had predicted him to finish close to the top. While Revolutionary did place third, Charming Kitten finished a ninth while Overanalyze and Palace Malice finished 11th and 12th. In accordance with ESPN Stats & Info, Pletcher hasn't had much success in the derby despite his reputation as one of the best teachers. While Revolutionary became the 2nd top-six finisher for Pletcher, the utmost effective end doesn't outweigh the possible lack of performance from Pletcher's horses on Saturday. Follow me on Twitter:
