Chelsea to face Man Utd in FA Cup - Fox Sports

Holders Chelsea ground out a 2-0 win at second-tier Middlesbrough to set up an FA Cup quarter-final glamour tie at Manchester United.

Second-half goals from Ramires and Victor Moses secured victory at the Riverside Stadium as Chelsea bounced back from Sunday's 2-0 loss at Manchester City, which dropped them to fourth place in the Premier League.

Victory in the fifth-round tie means Chelsea remain on course for what would be a fifth FA Cup title in seven seasons.

Interim manager Rafael Benitez has complained about fixture congestion in recent weeks, but with his side also still in contention in the Europa League, the European champions look set for a busy few weeks.

Chelsea made eight changes to the side beaten by City at the weekend, with Fernando Torres and skipper John Terry both returning to the starting line-up.

Oscar and Moses also came back into the team and they almost combined to break the deadlock in the 11th minute, but Oscar could not get enough purchase on the shot from his teammate's cut-back.

In the 26th minute, Australian striker Scott McDonald came close to opening the scoring but his header from Nicky Bailey's right-wing cross drifted narrowly wide of the right-hand post.

The hosts went even closer five minutes before halftime, with Petr Cech spilling a shot from Boro winger Mustapha Carayol and obliging Terry to make a hurried clearance.

It therefore came as something as a relief to the visitors when Ramires put them in front six minutes into the second half.

Yossi Benayoun laid the ball back to Ramires and his placed shot from the edge of the box beat goalkeeper Jason Steele with the aid of a slight deflection off the back of the crouching Torres.

The goal calmed Chelsea's nerves and after Steele had tipped over a shot from Torres, Terry headed wide at a corner.

Eden Hazard replaced Benayoun and the Belgian quickly created Chelsea's second goal in the 73rd minute, neatly exchanging passes with Oscar and speeding into the box before squaring for Moses to score from close range.

The hosts produced a flurry of late chances, with Cech notably saving from Ishamel Miller, but Chelsea survived to take their place in the last eight and take some of the heat off the under-fire Benitez.

Chelsea Hamilton Academical a' Fernando Torres Is not the Sole Issue - Sportige

There are a few factors to Chelsea not really living up to the preseason expectations, that go beyond the fact that this was within just ideal thinking by Roman Abramovich and the others when building the team, but Fernando Torres and strikers generally not scoring targets seems to be usually the one. While Chelsea are second in the category in 2010 with 55 targets, only 10 of them came from their strikers. Fernando Torres, the often disappointingAA50 million man, has won only 7 category targets on 23 begins and four more performances coming off the bench. He began rather well, but a league goal was scored by hasnat since December. And beyond Torres? Just two more objectives. Roberto Di Matteo and Rafa Benitez didnat really count on Daniel Sturrdige, who was simply also hurt early in the growing season. He replied with only one goal, as Chelsea have played with one striker in the array all time, and until Demba Ba came, only one in the team. Demba Ba has started four times up to now and coming two more off the bench. He's only one goal. Joe Lampard (11 goals) and Juan Mata (10 goals) have scored a lot more than all of the strikers combined. Chelsea have a very impressive approaching midfield to provide, but taking a closer consider the distribution of these driving -Acompleting 454 short, 60 long, 22 Cross and only 1 through pass per game, you can view why, perhaps, strikers arenat doing so well. There is not really a lot of focus on them, while with Torres, you also know it has a to do with his off depth have been lacked by the ball movement which has as his confidence continues to shatter. Not all is bad for Chelsea a' otherwise they wouldnat be at third. Their security is tied for 2nd most readily useful in the Premier League, allowing 30 goals in 27 suits, with Arsenal tied and Manchester City the only team superior (24 goals conceded). Still, perhaps not seeing a striker score a single target in February means things, independently and the device of play, arenat quite right. The result of the protection, 9 goals, is attached with what their strikers are giving them.

Sevilla pair on City radar? - Manchester City

The report states that £17.6m could be enough to land the Sevilla pair, and see the Spanish winger and French youngster arrive at the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Charles Perrin writes: "The Citizens are planning a major overhaul of the squad, with Edin Dzeko, Joleon Lescott and Kolo Toure set to leave the Etihad.

"City are looking to firm up their summer shopping list early, as they want to steal a march on rivals Manchester United, who are on course to unseat them as Premier League champions.

Talksport reckon that Benfica target Omar Abdulrahman has turned down a loan switch to the Portuguese club because he's holding out for a move to City.

A report on the website states: "The Al-Ain playmaker spent two weeks on trial at the Etihad Stadium last year and says the opportunity was "an honour", despite failing to land a deal at the club.

"The Emirati club were open to the deal but the 21-year-old UAE international decided against it, with a move to England top of his wish list."

Finally, despite widespread reports that he'd like to return to Germany in the future, Edin Dzeko has denied speculation that he's already spoken to Borussia Dortmund about a move at the end of this season.

David Anderson writes in the Daily Mirror:" Dzeko, who was top scorer in the Bundesliga in 2009-10, rejected claims he has met Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp, but admitted he admires the German champions.

"'That's not true,' he said. "There is a lot of talk and a lot is written. If you believed every word, I'd be playing at FC Bayern or AC Milan by now.

"'Dortmund are a top club. Everyone in Europe can see that and with Jurgen Klopp, they have a great coach working there.'"

Preview: Real Madrid face Barcelona in another Clasico - Ahram Online

Barca and Real face off again at the King's Cup semifinal Tuesday, but will have major upcoming games in the back of their heads

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo from Portugal, right, duels for the ball with Barcelona's Andres Iniesta during their Copa del Rey soccer match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid (photo: AP)

The two "Clasicos" - the second a La Liga clash at the Bernabeu on Saturday - will provide rich entertainment for fans but they are relatively insignificant compared to Barca's game at home to AC Milan on March 12 and Real's match at Manchester United a week earlier.

The King's Cup is never a priority for Spain's dominant pair as long as they are still alive in Europe's elite club competition and the domestic league, and Real have all but given up on a second consecutive La Liga title after slipping 16 points behind leaders Barca with 13 games left.

Barca are still reeling after going down 2-0 to Milan at the San Siro in Wednesday's last-16 first leg, though they picked themselves up and fought back from a goal down for a 2-1 La Liga win at home to Sevilla on Saturday.

Real, held to a 1-1 draw by United at the Bernabeu On Feb. 13, also came from a goal down to win on Saturday, beating bottom side Deportivo La Coruna 2-1 at the Riazor with Cristiano Ronaldo coming off the bench to set up Gonzalo Higuain for the winner.

Assistant Barca coach Jordi Roura, standing in for Tito Vilanova who is recovering from throat surgery, praised his players for putting Wednesday's shock reverse behind them.

"You can lose a match but the really important thing is the reaction," he told a news conference after the Sevilla game.

"But once again the team rose to the occasion and showed the pride needed to secure a very important victory for the league campaign. Their reaction was splendid."

Cup holders Barca have a slight advantage ahead of Real's visit to the Nou Camp, which will be the 224th meeting between the arch rivals in all competitions, after they secured a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu in last month's first leg.

Cesc Fabregas fired Barca ahead five minutes after halftime and Raphael Varane nodded in an equaliser for Real nine minutes from the end.

The pair meet at Sevilla's Sanchez Pizjuan stadium on Wednesday (2100) with Atletico holding a 2-1 advantage from the first leg at the Calderon.

Barca struggled to create scoring chances against both Milan and Sevilla, leading some to question their slavish adherence to a possession-based playing style and ask whether they had an effective "Plan B" when faced with ultra-defensive sides.

They have also found it tough to keep a clean sheet in recent outings and Roura said it was something they needed to improve if they were to keep alive their hopes of a treble of trophies this term.

"It's true that we are having the odd problem in that sense and it's something to improve on, above all in our positioning in defence," Roura said.

Barca's World Player of the Year Lionel Messi can equal the record goal tally for "Clasicos" of 18 held by former Real great Alfredo Di Stefano with a goal on Tuesday.

Johnson back on top with 2nd Daytona 500 victory

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Jimmie Johnson went two years without a title and suddenly became an afterthought at the Daytona 500.

Johnson won his second Daytona 500 on Sunday, a year after he completed just one lap in the race and three months after falling short in his bid for a sixth Sprint Cup title. That so-called drought had made him something of a no-name during Speedweeks.

"In my mind, I didn't feel like I was under the radar," he said. "I felt like we were working hard to put the best product on the track. I guess I was quiet in the overall spectrum of things from the media side. I think people in the garage, people knew we were sitting on a lot of speed and had a very good race car."

Johnson's win came on the same day that Patrick, who became the first woman in history to start a Sprint Cup race from the pole, again made history as the first woman to lead laps in the Daytona 500.

Her only mistakes were on pit road, where she got beat on the race back to the track, and on the final lap, when she was running third but got snookered by the veterans and faded to eighth. That's going to stick with Patrick for some time.

"I would imagine pretty much anyone would be kicking themselves about what they coulda, shoulda have done to give themselves an opportunity to win," she said. "I think that's what I was feeling today, was uncertainty as to how I was going to accomplish that."

There were several multicar crashes, but no one was hurt and none of them approached the magnitude of the wreck that injured more than two dozen fans in the grandstand at the end of the second-tier Nationwide Series race on the same track a day earlier. Daytona International Speedway workers were up until 2 a.m repairing the fence that was damaged in the accident, and track officials offered Sunday morning to move any fans who felt uneasy sitting close to the track.

Several drivers said the accident and concern for the fans stuck with them overnight and into Sunday morning, and Johnson was quick to send his thoughts from Victory Lane.

"I just want to give a big shout-out to all the fans, and I also want to send my thoughts and prayers out to everybody that was injured in the grandstands," Johnson said.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., whose father was killed in this race 12 years ago, was involved in Saturday's accident but refocused and finished second to Johnson, his Hendrick Motorsports teammate.

"Me personally, I was just really waiting to get the news on how everybody was, how all the fans were overnight, just hoping that things were going to improve," Earnhardt said, adding that he "wasn't really ready to proceed until you had some confirmation that things were looking more positive."

The race itself, the debut for NASCAR's new Gen-6 car, was quite similar to all the other Cup races during Speedweeks in that the cars seemed to line up in a single-file parade along the top groove of the track. It made the 55th running of the Daytona 500 relatively uneventful.

The driver known as "Five-time" raced past defending NASCAR champion Brad Keselowski on the final restart and pulled out to a sizeable lead that nobody challenged over the final six laps.

Johnson and Keselowski went down to the wire last season in their race for the Sprint Cup title, with Johnson faltering in the final two races as Keselowski won his first Cup championship.

Although it was a bit of an upset that stuck with Johnson into the offseason, it gave him no extra motivation when he found himself racing with Keselowski late Sunday for the Daytona 500.

"As far as racing with Brad out there, you really lose sight of who is in what car," Johnson said. "It's just somebody between you and the trophy. It could have been anybody."

Once Johnson cleared Keselowski on the last restart he had a breakaway lead with Greg Biffle and Patrick behind him. But as the field closed in on the checkered flag, Earnhardt finally made his move, just too late and too far behind to get close enough to the lead.

Earnhardt wound up second for the third time in the last four years. But with all the crashes the Hendrick cars have endured in restrictor-plate races — teammate Kasey Kahne was in the first accident Sunday — team owner Rick Hendrick was just fine with the finish.

"We have a hard time finishing these races. Boy, to run 1-2, man, what a day," Hendrick said. Jeff Gordon, who was a contender early, faded late to 20th.

"Man, it's like playing the lottery; everybody's got a ticket," he said. "I've struck out a lot at these tracks, left with torn-up race cars. Today we had a clean day."

Mark Martin was third in a Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota. Keselowski, who overcame two accidents earlier in the race, wound up fourth in Penske Racing's new Ford. Ryan Newman was fifth in a Chevy for Stewart-Haas Racing and was followed by Roush-Fenway Racing's Greg Biffle, who was second on the last lap but was shuffled back with Patrick to finish sixth.

Patrick was clearly disappointed with her finish. When the race was on the line, she was schooled by Earnhardt, who made his last move and blocked any chance she had.

Still, Patrick became the first woman in history to lead laps in the 500 when she passed Michael Waltrip on a restart on Lap 90. She stayed on the point for two laps, then was shuffled back to third. She ended up leading five laps, another groundbreaking moment for Patrick, who as a rookie in 2005 became the first woman to lead the Indianapolis 500 and now is the 13th driver to lead laps in both the Daytona 500 and the Indy 500.

"Dale did a nice job and showed what happens when you plan it out, you drop back and get that momentum. You are able to go to the front," Patrick said. "I think he taught me something. I'm sure I'll watch the race and there will be other scenarios I see that can teach me, too."

"She's going to make a lot of history all year long. It's going to be a lot of fun to watch her progress," he said. "Every time I've seen her in a pretty hectic situation, she always really remained calm. She's got a great level head. She's a racer. She knows what's coming. She's smart about her decisions. She knew what to do today as far as track position and not taking risks. I enjoy racing with her."

Johnson, one of three heavyweight drivers who took their young daughters to meet Patrick — "the girl in the bright green car" — after she won the pole in qualifications, tipped his cap, too.

"I didn't think about it being Danica in the car," Johnson said. "It was just another car on the track that was fast. That's a credit to her and the job she's doing."

The field was weakened by an early nine-car accident that knocked out race favorite Kevin Harvick and sentimental favorite Tony Stewart.

Harvick had won two support races coming into the 500 to cement himself as the driver to beat, but the accident sent him home with a 42nd place finish.

That accident also took former winner Jamie McMurray, his Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Juan Pablo Montoya, and Kasey Kahne out of contention.

The next accident — involving nine cars — came 105 laps later and brought a thankful end to Speedweeks for Carl Edwards. He was caught in his fifth accident since testing last month, and this wreck collected six other Ford drivers.

The field suddenly had six Toyota drivers at the front as Joe Gibbs Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing drivers took control of the race. But JGR's day blew up — literally — when the team was running 1-2-3 with Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch setting the pace.

Kenseth, who led a race-high 86 laps, went to pit road first with an engine problem, and Busch was right behind him with a blown engine. Busch was already in street clothes watching as Hamlin led the field.

Hamlin's shot disappeared when he found himself in the wrong lane on the final restart. He tried to hook up with Keselowski to get them back to Johnson, but blamed former teammate Joey Logano for ruining the momentum of the bottom lane.

Hamlin offered a backhanded apology to Keselowski on Twitter, posting that he couldn't get close enough because "your genius teammate was too busy messing up the inside line 1 move at a time."

Weve got mail: Quit smoking with Barça | totalBarça

In keeping with the programs at FC Barcelona, we wanted to mention a campaign they are currently supporting – the "Quit smoking with Barça" initiative.  One of the agencies working with FCB on this project reached out to totalBarça and we are pleased to spread the word of this healthy campaign.

We were contacted by agency, Performics, which currently works with FC Barcelona on the Quit smoking with Barça campaign.  They work on and support the development and promotion of the app known as iCoach.  This quit smoking assistant app has two versions – a general version that was developed for the general population as well as a version that is branded by FCB.

In brief, the campaign focuses on helping people "feel better, look better, have more money and find new energy…FC Barcelona and the European Commission designed a free quit smoking program that will guide you step by step towards a smoke free life. Once you've beaten the cigarette, nothing will stop you to reach your goals."

We would like to thank James for reaching out to us and wish FC Barcelona, Performics, and culés all the best with this initiative.

Spurs fear nobody - Dembele - Clubcall

Moussa Dembele claims Tottenham do not fear any other team as they target a fourth-place Premier League finish and the Europa League.

The Belgium international helped Andre Villas-Boas' side secure a Europa League last-16 double-header against Inter Milan with a late leveller in Lyon on Thursday to seal a 3-2 aggregate win.And his attention is now turning to Monday night's Premier League London derby at West Ham with fourth-placed Spurs needing the win to restore the four-point lead over rivals Arsenal ahead of next weekend's north London showdown at White Hart Lane.Spurs blew a 10-point lead over the Gunners last season to end up missing out on third place and subsequently Champions League qualification when Chelsea won the trophy against Bayern Munich in May which meant fourth spot was not good enough. However, Dembele feels Spurs are a different proposition these days and he claims their unbeaten league run stretching back to December proves they are brimming with confidence."We don't have to fear any team," said Dembele."People have respect for us. If you're in a winning mood it's important in the league."We have two more very important games coming up in the league so the confidence will stay high and that's good for us."On the Hammers trip, he added: "It will be a physical game, for sure, but we are used to it and this is a special match for us and the supporters too because it is a derby."Punters can use their free bet to back Spurs to finish the season in the top four and add the Europa League trophy to the White Hart Lane trophy cabinet.

Manhattan project Liga: Hamilton Academical Barcelona 2-1 Sevilla FC: Match Assessment - Barca Blaugranes (blog)

Barcelona recovered from a disappointing first-half performance to secure a comeback victory against Unai Emery's Sevilla on Saturday evening at the Camp Nou. The win, which temporarily extends Barça's lead at the top of La Liga to a staggering fifteen points, comes courtesy of second-half goals from David Villa and Lionel Messi; not bad for a team in crisis...

With Tuesday's Copa del Rey Clasico in mind, Jordi Roura made six changes to the side that lost 2-0 at the San Siro against AC Milan, as Javier Mascherano, Martin Montoya, Alex Song, Thiago Alcântara, David Villa and Alexis Sánchez were all granted a place in the starting XI. Carles Puyol dropped out of the squad altogether as a precautionary measure following a nasty collision with Giampaolo Pazzini in Wednesday's defeat while the other five simply took their place on the bench. Despite the changes, Lionel Messi started in attack, with Andrés Iniesta and Gerard Piqué also starting in midfield and defense respectively. Would the Blaugrana be able to secure the three points and build up some momentum heading into an El Clasico double-header?

Unai Emery also took the chance to rotate one key member of his starting XI, as Alvaro Negredo dropped to the bench for tactical reasons with Senegalese forward Baba Diawara taking his place as the lone-front man. After watching Milan shut-up shop to great effect at the San Siro, Emery favoured a slightly more open approach. Sure, the defense was disciplined and he ensured that plenty of men were behind the ball whenever Barça got the ball, but there was at least some space for the Blaugrana attack to exploit. As per usual, Messi was at the forefront of Barcelona's early pressure and he created the game's first chance with a nice through ball to Andrés Iniesta who had found space on the left. Iniesta proceeded to skip past the sliding challenge of Coke, but in doing so he also allowed Sevilla the time to recover and block his goal-bound shot.

It took Barcelona ten minutes to register another shot – as Messi struck a free-kick into the Sevilla wall – but they were slowly but surely beginning to exert control over the game. Sevilla dropped a little deeper; gave away possession a lot more frequently and it wasn't long before Barcelona started to carve out chances. Dani Alves came close to breaking the deadlock on 21 minutes, as his long-range effort left Beto flat-footed, but his shot was deflected behind for a corner kick. Surprisingly, Barça created another chance from that corner as the ball was worked to Lionel Messi at the far-post, who forced a nice save from Beto with a well-struck right-footed shot. Unfortunately, we couldn't say the same of Messi's free-kicks; the Argentine failed to hit the target with even one of his three first-half free-kicks and typically, he was made to rue those misses as Sevilla took the lead just minutes before half-time.

It was a relatively simple goal to concede as well; Martin Montoya misjudged the flight of a Sevilla free-kick allowing Coke the space to deliver a cross into the heart of the Barcelona defense, where Alberto Botia capitalised on a defensive mismatch to climb above Dani Alves and head Sevilla into the lead. Maybe this was the wake-up call that the players needed; now a goal down at the Camp Nou, Barça appeared to up the intensity and they could have levelled the scores before the break – if only someone had taken a chance on Montoya's low cross.

Jordi Roura made a change at the interval, replacing Alexis Sánchez with Cristian Tello and the Spaniard made an instant impact. Everyone knows that Tello has pace to burn and if the first few minutes of the second-half were anything to go by, Coke just couldn't cope, and just as Tello was forcing the issue with Coke, Barça began to force the issue with the rest of the Sevilla defense. Unsurprisingly, an equaliser soon followed.

Credit to Dani Alves for providing the assist with a picture-perfect cross, but what about the header from David Villa? In his first match back from illness, Villa had understandably struggled to impose himself in the first-half but he was ready to make an impact, peeling off Alberto Botia to convert from the edge of the six-yard box. It was Villa's twelfth goal of the season and a fitting reminder of the extra dimension El Guaje brings to the Barcelona attack.

Was the crisis over? Clearly Barcelona remain perfectly capable of scoring goals – despite the hysteria after Wednesday's loss – and just to hammer that point home, Lionel Messi completed the comeback on the hour-mark, slotting home from ten yards after a selfless cut-back from Cristian Tello. It was Messi's 38th La Liga goal of the season and Tello's fifth assist; whatever Roura (or Tito) said at half-time, it was working: Barcelona were back.

Emery was determined to spoil the party though, immediately responding with a substitution of his own as Alvaro Negredo replaced the ineffective Baba in attack. They obviously fancied their chances against a shaky Blaugrana defense, but Roura recognised the danger, and introduced Xavi to the fray. The idea was relatively straight-forward: Sevilla needed possession to score an equaliser and Xavi was the man who could keep that from happening; but the execution was lacking. Sevilla were still threatening and came within inches of an equaliser through substitute Alvaro Negredo, so Roura went one step further and brought Sergio Busquets on for David Villa. This necessitated a slight tactical reshuffle, but Barça responded to the change well and looked slightly more assured as a result. Sevilla were now finding it difficult to even win possession let alone engineer a chance at an equaliser, and thanks to some composed defending in injury-time from Mascherano, Barcelona managed to hold out for a valuable victory.

Next up, Barcelona host Real Madrid in a Copa del Rey semi-final second-leg before, yep, you guessed it, facing Los Blancos in yet another Clasico next Saturday. Until then, Visca el Barça!

Daytona 500 runs on schedule, day after fans hurt

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Fans feeling unsafe after the terrifying crash at Daytona International Speedway a day earlier were able to change seats for NASCAR's biggest race on Sunday.

Workers successfully repaired a section of fence — 54 feet wide and 22 feet high — that was shredded Saturday when Kyle Larson's car went airborne on the final lap of a second-tier race and crashed through the barrier that separates cars from fans. Large pieces of debris, including a tire, sprayed into the upper and lower section of the stands.

The crash the day before the Daytona 500 injured more than 30 people, raising more questions about fan safety at race tracks.

Halifax Health spokesman Byron Cogdell said seven people with crash-related injuries remained hospitalized in Daytona Beach in stable condition. The six people brought to a different Halifax hospital in Port Orange with crash-related injuries had all been discharged, Cogdell said.

A spokeswoman at Florida Memorial Medical Center would not release information on the patients brought to that hospital.

Track President Joie Chitwood, meanwhile, said if any fans are uncomfortable with their up-close seating for the Daytona 500, officials would work to move them.

"If fans are unhappy with their seating location or if they have any incidents, we would relocate them," Chitwood said. "So we'll treat that area like we do every other area of the grandstand. If a fan is not comfortable where they're sitting, we make every accommodation we can."

There were several wrecks during the Daytona 500, though nothing that put fans in danger. Jimmie Johnson won the race for the second time.

Larry Spencer of Nanticoke, Pa., said he wasn't sure if he wants to ever sit that low again after his 15-year-old brother, Derrick, needed three stitches in his cheek after being hit by metal debris flying from Saturday's crash. A day after sitting close to the fence, they returned with tickets dozens of rows farther away from the track.

"I thought it was just neat to see the cars going by that close," Spencer said. "After yesterday, though, I definitely will reconsider sitting lower ever again."

The tire that flew into the stands landed a couple of rows above where they had been standing. After the crash, looking around at the people seriously injured, Spencer said he decided to take his brother to a hospital himself so that speedway crews and paramedics could focus on the people who needed more help.

Track workers finished repairs about 2 a.m. Sunday, having installed a new fence post, new metal meshing and part of the concrete wall.

Officials decided not to rebuild the collapsed cross-over gate, which allows fans to travel between the stands and the infield before races.

Daytona has a grandstand remodel planned. Chitwood said the injuries could prompt a redesign that might include sturdier fences or stands further away from the on-track action.

"It's tough to connect the two right now in terms of a potential redevelopment and what occurred," Chitwood said. "We were prepared yesterday, had emergency medical respond. As we learn from this, you bet: If there are things that we can incorporate into the future, whether it's the current property now or any other redevelopment, we will.

Daytona reexamined its fencing and ended up replacing the entire thing following Carl Edwards' scary crash at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama in 2009. Edwards' car sailed into the fence and spewed debris into the stands.

"We've made improvements since then," Chitwood said. "I think that's the key: that we learn from this and figure out what else we need to do."

NASCAR plans to take what remained of Larson's sheared car along with debris back to its research and development center in Charlotte, N.C., for testing.

"We'll bring in the best and brightest," said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR's senior vice president for racing operations. "Anything we can learn will be put in place. ... Fans are our first priority. Obviously we want everybody to be safe at an event. We've talked to the speedway. We're confident in what's in place at today's event. Certainly still thinking about those affected, but we're confident to move forward for this race."

The 12-car crash began as the front-runners approached the checkered flag. Leader Regan Smith attempted to block Brad Keselowski for the win, triggering a pileup that could have been much worse.

Larson's burning engine wedged through a gaping hole in the fence. Parts and pieces of his car sprayed into the stands, including a tire that cleared the top of the fence and landed midway up the spectator section closest to the track.

The 20-year-old Larson stood in shock a few feet from his car as fans in the stands waved frantically for help. Smoke from the burning engine briefly clouded the area, and emergency vehicles descended on the scene.

Ambulance sirens could be heard wailing behind the grandstands at a time the race winner would typically be doing celebratory burnouts.

"It was freaky. When I looked to my right, the accident happened," Rick Harpster of Orange Park said. "I looked over and I saw a tire fly straight over the fence into the stands, but after that I didn't see anything else. That was the worst thing I have seen, seeing that tire fly into the stands. I knew it was going to be severe."

In 1987, Bobby Allison's car lifted off the track at Talladega while running over 200 mph, careening into the steel-cable fence and scattering debris into the crowd. That crash led to the use of horsepower-sapping restrictor plates at Talladega and its sister track in Daytona, NASCAR's fastest layouts.

As a result, the cars all run nearly the same speed, and the field is typically bunched tightly together — which plenty of drivers have warned is actually a more dangerous scenario than higher speeds.

"That's one of the things that really does scare you," Allison said. "But it's always a possibility because of the speeds, where they are."

Manchester City Ready To Pay £54m To Land Edinson Cavani ...

Manchester City are to meet the £54million buyout clause figure in striker Edinson Cavani's Napoli contract to ensure they get their man in the summer.

Etihad Stadium manager Roberto Mancini has made signing Cavani his number one priority in the summer as he looks to save his job following a disappointing season in defence of the Premier League title.

And, according to the Sunday Express, Manchester City will shell out £54million – the figure that triggers the right to speak to Cavani – in order to beat off competition from Chelsea and Real Madrid, who are also keen on signing the Uruguayan international forward.

City considered an approach in the January transfer window but will ensure they get their man in the summer, with Cavani seen as the ideal replacement for Mario Balotelli, who joined AC Milan in January, and Edin Dzeko and Carlos Tevez, who could both be offloaded at the end of the season.

Mancini is also considering moves to sign Atletico Madrid's Colombian goalscoring machine Radamel Falcao as well as Liverpool striker Luis Suarez in the summer to ensure there is no repeat of this season in which City have struggled to match rivals Manchester United and make an impact in the Champions League.

Casillas said he had been spending so much time at Madrid's Valdebebas training facility to get straight back playing the moment possible.

"Until now I've not had much power in it, but I'm receiving it back little by little," he explained. "We are at the halfway point of the damage. I've still got per month to go. Di Maria stated that it would suit Madrid to be playing abroad in both of the upcoming, possibly season-defining, activities.

"Things are going well and develop to carry on this way," he said. "We know that we've to have big matches in both competitions and that it will not be easy. Because we do well when things are against us probably playing away will soon be inside our favor. We've had this week to focus on the simplest way to approach the activities. I really hope everything goes well."

Manchester Town v Chelsea FC - The Gooners Information

The reigning champions' defence of their Premier League title has passed in recent months and a run of three games with no win has observed City now has another chance of retaining their title. Roberto Mancini was exceptionally critical of his players following the 3-1 defeat at Southampton inside their last league game and he was pleased that they bounced in the 4-0 triumph over Leeds United in the FA Cup last week-end to steadfastly keep up a remarkable home record. So far this time just Manchester United have won at the Etihad stadium and City have won the final three property games against Chelsea before this experience. But, Chelsea had won eight of their previous 10 visits to City and yet another victory on Sunday would see Rafa Benitez's side move to inside a level of City in second position. Frankfurt draws 0-0 at Freiburg in Bundesliga - Football news

BERLIN (AP) — Eintracht Frankfurt drew 0-0 at Freiburg on Friday to hold off the home side's challenge for the Bundesliga's last Champions League place.

"The draw was fair," Frankfurt coach Armin Veh said. "We didn't allow anything in the first half, Freiburg were better in the second." Frankfurt's Stefan Aigner — who had a goal ruled out for offside early on — could only hit the side-netting after racing toward goal in the 17th minute.

Freiburg improved after the break and almost scored from a corner in the 64th, when Stefano Celozzi cleared Jan Rosenthal's header off the line. One minute later, he did it again, this time from Mattias Ginter.

"That's what I'm there for," Celozzi said. Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp denied Max Kruse in the 76th, Johannes Flum headed over with five minutes remaining and then drew another save from Trapp. "When we in Freiburg get so many chances in the first Bundesliga (division), then I'm happy," Freiburg coach Christian Streich said. "We can't always hope that we score the winner in the 80th minute."

Frankfurt remained fourth while Freiburg stayed three points behind ahead of the rest of the weekend's games. Bundesliga leader Bayern Munich hosts Werder Bremen on Saturday, while defending champion Borussia Dortmund visits Borussia Moenchengladbach on Sunday.

Manchester United Youngster Phil Jones Facing Real Madrid Injury ...

Manchester United utility man Phil Jones is losing his battle to be fit in time to face Real Madrid in the Champions League, manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed on Thursday.

Jones left Old Trafford on crutches after suffering the injury in Manchester United's 2-1 FA Cup victory over Reading on Monday night which booked a quarter-final date with either Chelsea or Middlesbrough.

Jones will definitely miss Saturday's top versus bottom Premier League clash with struggling Queens Park Rangers, and it seems he is severely doubtful to make the return leg of the Champions League last 16 clash with Real Madrid with the tie finely poised after a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

"We are working very hard," Ferguson told Sportinglife. "He has an outside chance for Real Madrid – no more than that."

It has been Jones' versatility that Manchester United have benefited from most since snapping him up as a teenage centre-back from Blackburn Rovers. He has not only starred in his natural position but also as a holding midfielder and at right-back where he played against Reading and picked the injury up in a challenge with Jobi McAnuff.

It is in the defensive midfield role that he has particularly excelled, and he was employed in that position to stifle Cristiano Ronaldo in the 1-1 Champions League draw with Real Madrid last week. Ferguson will be desperate to have Jones available for the return leg at Old Trafford.

True Madrid versus. Rayo Vallecano: Final rating 2-0, Madrid reach early...

True Madrid scored twice early and then kept on for 72 minutes after Sergio Ramos was shown two yellow cards in under a minute. Real Madrid have a date with Manchester United to stay their Champions League Round of 16 wrap. Los Blancos face two El Clasico fits against Barcelona and two other league games, before they could concentrate on that. Today was one of those league games as Madrid located Rayo Vallecano, who had won six out of eight league games moving in to the match. It absolutely was not Rayo's day. Two early targets from Madrid put the forward and despite Sergio Ramos' giving down in the 18th minute, Rayo could not find a goal and failed to make the most of Real Sociedad's draw against Levante. Mesut Azil was a man on a mission from the opening whistle developing two fantastic odds for his teammates. They are able to not take advantage of the first, but the second gave a starting target in the second. Kaka led the way on a break and found Azil on the proper side with a quick cross. The German midfielder pulled the ball back across the box, to far for Kaka to get, in the ideal position for Morata who side-footed a shot in to the back of the net. Not really a bad to solution to begin your first career league start. Alejandro Dominguez had a fantastic opportunity to draw Rayo back the second, stealing the ball in the midfield and racing down the best side past Pepe. Unfortunately for Ray, Dominguez's opportunity combined just wide of the far post. Azil was aiding again in the 12th minute delivering a pinpoint free end on the head of the diving Sergio Ramos who headed the ball past RubAn. It did not even matter that a Rayo defender was securing to Ramos' jersey. Then things got weird. Referee JosA Paradas, who sent off Sergio Ramos back in March, sent him for an incredibly early shower and scheduled the defender twice in under one minute. The first card was shown for a tough foul by Ramos on Roberto Trashorras and the second card was for a planned handball. Both calls seems right based on the letter of regulations, but to send a new player down like this seems exceedingly hard. Despite the benefit, Ray just couldn't break through against Real Madrid despite have plenty of the plenty and ball of chances on target.

Bundesliga: Wolfsburg 0 Bayern Munich 2 - Soccerway

15 February 2013 23:48 Bayern Munich held up their march toward the Bundesliga subject after walking to a 2-0 conquer Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena on Friday. Mario Mandzukic showed number mercy against his former club when shooting home an excellent overhead effort in the first half, with Arjen Robben rounding off matters in injury-time to send the visitors 18 points obvious of Borussia Dortmund at the top of the standings. Possession was typically dominated by bayern through the entire first half, but despite some encouraging build-up play, the ball was missing, deteriorating several their attacks. Wolfsburg were found themselves with a purposeful store on the left flank to relieve pressure on their goal, persistent in protection and, through the directness and pace of Marcel Schafer and Ivica Olic. The first half seemed destined to get rid of in a, but, nine minutes before the break, the deadlock was broken by a moment magic Mandzukic in stunning fashion. Toni Kroos pumped a free kick toward the post and Bastian Schweinsteiger nodded back again to the Croatia striker, who connected superbly with an overhead kick that rifled in from 15 yards out. The home side made a serious effort to have back in the game in the 2nd half, but were still indebted to Naldo for coughing clear a Thomas Mueller effort off the line. Vieirinha blasted off goal from 20 yards out, but Wolfsburg's best opportunity of the match arrived from Diego, who bent a free kick toward the spot that brought the best out of Manuel Neuer with a quarter of an hour to go. The hosts' eagerness to return into the match might charge them at the death as Mueller found Robben peeling away in space, the winger burying a strong low end to seal the overall game.

Manchester United vs. Reading: Final score 2-1, hosts advance to ...

Reading put up a fight at Old Trafford in the fifth round of the FA Cup, but a slightly below-par Manchester United team were still too strong for the visitors, who were dispatched 2-1.

The match started just about as one might have expected, with Manchester United well on top. Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck both nearly got on the scoresheet in the early goal only for both strikers to have their shots blocked by Adrian Mariappa before Antonio Valencia headed well over.

But despite the opening spell looking like the prelude to a comprehensive United victory, the tide turned a little after a collision between Noel Hunt and Nemanja Vidic, which saw both temporarily removed from the field for treatment and the former leaking blood all over himself for most of the rest of the match. Reading were able to assert themselves and managed to trouble David de Gea several times through set pieces.

The hosts weren't looking particularly adventurous, but they still came very close to taking the lead when Adam Federici parried Tom Cleverley's long-range drive straight into the path of an unmarked Ashley Young, who was presented with an easy finish into a more or less unguarded net. Instead of taking it, he shot straight at the goalkeeper, who was able to shove his effort wide.

There was bad news on the injury front for United as well. Phil Jones went in late and off-balance on an attempted tackle of Jobi McAnuff, and ended up jarring his ankle so badly that the right back was forced off the pitch, replaced by Nani as Valencia dropped back into the defence. Nani made an immediate impact, crashing a volley off the base of Federici's far post within minutes of his introduction.

Better was to come, but it would take until the second half to do so. Just after the hour mark, Valencia was able to find Nani in the box as the Reading defence went missing, and the winger dispatched his effort past Federici to give United a vital lead.

Although the visitors responded well, with Adam le Fondre forcing de Gea into a superb stop after a twisting snapshot, Chicharito would double United's tally mere minutes thereafter. This time, Nani turned provider, whipping in a cross from the right with the Mexican got a head to, leaving Federici with no chance.

Again, Reading looked for a reply and this time they got it. Chris Smalling managed to intercept a dangerous looking pass intended for le Fondre, but he didn't do well enough when he tried to knock the delivery to safety. Instead, he simply presented possession to McAnuff, who slotted home coolly from close range to make it 2-1 in the 81st minute.

The visitors flooded forward in search of the equaliser, leaving the last ten minutes of match incredibly open. United had their chances to make it 3-1, but ultimately didn't need to worry about wasting them -- although their defending left rather a lot to be desired. After four minutes of somewhat-panicked injury time, Reading were defeated, and now a probable quarterfinal date with Chelsea awaits.

McClaren not willing to give up Eredivisie title chase | bettor.com

The FC Twente boss has stressed that he will continue fighting to challenge for the title, but has also insisted that the players must also develop a winning mentality if they are aiming to become Dutch champions.

FC Twente Enschede head coach, Steve McClaren, has stressed that he will not give up Eredivisie title ambitions despite his side's abysmal performances since the start of the second-half of the 2012/13 season.

The Tukkers were bossing the league table before the winter break, but three draws and a defeat has forced them to drop down to fourth position in the Eredivisie standings, four points behind the current leaders, PSV Eindhoven.

However, the former England manager has made it clear that he will not give up fighting to challenge for the Eredivisie title.

"I will keep on fighting. If all the players are fit and available, we have still got a good team that can compete for the Eredivisie title", McClaren was quoted as saying to Voetbal International.

The English trainer, who managed to guide the Tukkers to their first ever league title in the 2010/11 season during his earlier spell at De Grolsch Veste, went on to insist that his players must also develop a winning mentality and aim to become Dutch champions come the end of the ongoing campaign.

"At the moment, there is an inexplicable fear in the group. All the players have this week to decide whether they want to go in. Do they want to continue, or quit", McClaren concluded.

Since their 0-3 win over AZ Alkmaar at AFAS Stadion on December 22, the Tukkers have failed to claim all three points. After cruising to goalless stalemates against RKC Waalwijk and Feyenoord Rotterdam, the Enschede giants suffered a humiliating 2-4 defeat at the hands of FC Utrecht at De Grolsch Veste before going on to secure a hard fought 1-1 draw against PEC Zwolle on February 10.

FC Twente will lock horns against Willem II Tilburg in their upcoming Eredivisie clash at De Grolsch Veste on Saturday, February 16. McClaren would be hoping that his side return to winning ways to remain in the Eredivisie title hunt.

Real Madrid vs. Rayo Vallecano: Preview and TV routine...

Madrid tend to be more than adequate to defeat Rayo, but that is been the case in a number of games this season in which Madrid has drawn or lost. Rayo defectively want factors to help keep hold on tight their European position, but keeping them in the BernabAu is never simple. Here we're again with Real Madrid, a group that is adequate to beat anybody on any day, but can also find methods to completely underperform in probably the most arbitrary moments. Weekly we all know that Madrid could role to a multi-goal win but there's that bit of doubt in the rear of our heads that says, but they could drop and not appear. So which Madrid team can we see this week, fresh off a difficult fought sketch against Manchester United? With five players either wounded or suspended, Mourinho may be a little thin on options but there are still good options. In all likliehood it will drop to whether this Madrid team is all in mentally. Rayo is likely to be hoping for the more careless edition of Madrid as they make an effort to keep a European place. Rayo have one six out of the last ten league matches but that is counterbalanced by nine right failures against Los Blancos. They have also perhaps not acquired at the BernabAu since 1996. Now a sketch was bould a large deal, a gain will be not just huge but significantly old. Rayo will soon be without mind instructor Paco Jemez who's offering the very first of a two-match touchline ban. Real Madrid suspensions and injuries Out: Alvaro Arbeloa (suspended), Luka Modric (suspended), Gonzalo Higuain (suspended), Xabi Alonso (crotch), Iker Casillas (hand). In doubt: None Rayo Vallecano incidents and suspensions Out: Mikel Labaka (foot), Sergio GarcAa (thigh). In Doubt: Leo Baptistao (ankle). A lot of absent faces for Mourinho. The trio of Arbeloa, Modric and Higuain are typical helping red card suspensions, while Xabi Alonso is struggling with a groin injury. Iker Casillas remains out with a broken hand. Rayo's Labaka and Garcia are long term concerns, but Baptistao should really be accessible despite spraining his ankle early in the week. Eredivisie wrap: Ajax grab second as Feyenoord falter - Soccerway

Ajax went outright second in the Eredivisie after earning a 2-0 away win at RKC Waalwijk while Feyenoord fell to defeat on Sunday.

They also created a three-point gap to third side Twente and fourth-placed Feyenoord, with the latter succumbing to a surprise 3-2 loss away to PEC Zwolle.

The day began horribly for Ronald Koeman's side, as they trailed 2-0 within seven minutes by means of an own goal to striker Graziano Pelle and a Darryl Lachman strike.

Pelle went some way to making up for finding the back of his own net with two goals in as many minutes to draw Feyenoord level with 10 minutes to play in the first half at IJsseldelta Stadion.

But Zwolle ultimately denied their highly rated opponents, as Denni Avdic scored a 75th-minute winner to help his side escape the drop zone and into 15th place.

Vitesse went fifth on the table with their first win in three matches, as they ended Groningen's two-match winning streak with a 2-0 result at home.

Goals to Mike Havenaar and Wilfried Bony, the latter a penalty, saw Vitesse close within two points of Feyenoord and a European spot.

Sven Kums had put the visitors up on 10 minutes, but Den Haag had all the momentum at the break as they not only led but had a man advantage.

Danny Holla and Santi Kolk both got their names on the scoresheet, before Joey van den Berg received his marching orders for the visitors.
