Sweet 16 Bracket: Predicting South Region's Matchups

After Florida Gulf Coast's shocking win over No. 7 seed San Diego State on Sunday, the Sweet 16 field for the South region has been determined.

FGCU will play No. 3 seed Florida, while No. 1 seed Kansas and No. 4 seed Michigan will battle it out. Both matchups will take place on March 29.

The first word that comes to mind when you look at Kansas is "balance." Led by star freshman guard Ben McLemore and shot-blocking center Jeff Withey, the Jayhawks have everything needed to win the national championship this season.

Not only does Kansas rank 10th in the nation in field-goal percentage and 23rd in offensive efficiency, but it also ranks first in opponents' field-goal percentage and 11th in defensive efficiency.

Kansas' second-half surge against North Carolina in the round of 32 on Sunday showed just how dangerous this team can be. The Jayhawks went 7-of-28 from the floor in the first half, then went 17-of-27 in the second half. That was despite McLemore going an uncharacteristic 0-of-9 from the floor while scoring just two points.

While Michigan can hang with Kansas offensively, the teams are far apart when it comes to defense. The Wolverines rank 127th in opponents' field-goal percentage and 98th in defensive efficiency.

Given what Florida Gulf Coast has done so far, who's to say the Eagles can't beat Florida? They beat No. 2 seed Georgetown and No. 7 seed San Diego State by 10 points apiece en route to the Sweet 16.

On the other hand, Georgetown came into the tournament without many scoring options beyond Otto Porter Jr. San Diego State appeared to not want to play any defense. Florida figures to bring it on both sides of the floor.

Florida not only ranks ninth in field-goal percentage and seventh in offensive efficiency this season, but it also ranks fourth in opponents' field-goal percentage and second in defensive efficiency. It's part of the reason why KenPom.com rated the Gators as the No. 1 team in the country this season.
