Alonso fastest in ultimate exercise at Bahrain

SAKHIR, Bahrain (AP) a Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso recovered from a spin Saturday to publish the fastest lap in the third and final Formula One training session for the Bahrain Grand Prix. Looking for his 2nd successive victory after ending a drought in China last week-end, Alonso finished a panel in 1:33.247 to finish 0.101 head of three-time defending F1 champ Sebastian Vettel. Red Bull teammate Mark Webber was next fastest, with Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen finishing last. Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton was sixth but his period came to a finish when he destroyed his left straight back tire. A driver has topped the three classes, indicating a wide open race Sunday that has been overshadowed by anti-government demonstrators who are demanding a larger say in the split Gulf region.
