Picture: Getty Images/Stu Forster Source: Getty Pictures A RIOTING Newcastle United fan was photographed apparently attempting to punch a horse after violence broke out adhering to a defeat against regional competitors Sunderland. Twenty-nine individuals were caught on Sunday, the majority for public order offences, as fans clashed in and around the city's main railway station, Northumbria Police said. Newcastle United said these were shocked by violence which broke out after their 3-0 home reduction in the English Premier League. "We were embarrassed and appalled by the conduct of a minority of so-called supporters who last night (Sunday) were associated with disturbances and dysfunction in Newcastle town centre after the match," the team said on the nufc.co.uk site. Newcastle promised to get the strongest possible action against anyone involved in the disturbances and would ban them from suits for life. Images in the British media on Monday showed one advocate in a Newcastle United replica shirt striving a strike at a police horse. The horse, called Bud, wasn't wounded and was "safe in his stable and seems fine", said West Yorkshire Police Horses, which supplies mounted patrols for soccer matches round the country. "These deplorable people have no place at Newcastle United and bring shame on the club and a large proportion of its proper, law-abiding fans," the club said. The assault came each day after fighting broke out among Millwall supporters joining their side's FA Cup semi-final against Wigan at London's Wembley Stadium. Sunderland's success increased the Wearside club's hopes of escaping relegation and took them to 15th on the Premier League table, two points behind 13th-placed Newcastle and three above the drop zone.
