The track record was broken by governor Charlie ( 2-1 favorite ) on the way to a five-lengths win at the G3 $500,000 Sunland Derby at Sunland Park late Sunday. Trained by Bob Baffert, he covered the nine-furlongs range in 1:47.54, eclipsing the previous track record of 1:48.20. Some early speed was shown by show Some Magic ( 24-1 ) on the race from his ninth post, but Saint Prado (10-1) and Abraham (7-2) were told to the leading and took the original fractional in a swift 22.74. Martin Garcia located Governor Charlie only with their external in next, followed by Show Some Magic and Just Win Baby (19-1). The whole field was very compact as they went to the backstretch with the jobs unchanged until they reached the three-quarter post. Garcia made his move on the outside with Governor Charlie once he thought the move by Show Some Magic just behind him as they entered the far turn. Governor Charlie took a half-length lead to the top of the home-stretch being challenged by Show Some Magic, but as they enter the stretch, Garcia questioned Governor Charlie for his all and he responded drawing absent obvious for the five length win. Show Some Magic went a huge battle for second, concluding just over three lengths before Abraham, who fought back again to finish third. He was running fifth early on and had to move four wide and complete the race 2nd. Abraham employed Saint Prado through the first fractionsa'as did Governor Charliea'and valiantly fought onto prevail a solid third place a period ahead of the other Bob Baffert-trained horse Shakin It Up (2-1), who rallied from last place to complete fourth just a nose ahead of Stormdriver. It was a disappointing end for Shakin It Up, who was the day line favorite and was anticipated to challenge the win together with his stablemate. Jockey David Flores had him last until he started initially to go at the three-quarter post, but can only handle a gentle rally internally. Stormdriver, Mudflats, Saint Prado, Dry Summer and Just Win Baby finished the order of finish. The Sunland Derby was the last of the Kentucky Derby qualifying contests, distributing 85 points to the very first four finishers. The winner gained 50, 2nd place 20, third place 10 and last five points. The 50 points gained by Governor Charlie fully guaranteed him a spot on the gate of the Run for the Roses the initial Saturday of May. He now is in third place in the factors, standing behind Will Require Charge and Vyjack. Show Some Magic's 20 points place him in 15th place, Abraham's 10 points move him to the 26th location and the five points by Shakin It Up place him in 35th place. The track record was broken by governor Charlie, but we must not look too much involved with it. Maybe not downplaying his performance, but take into account that there have been two other track records broken on the card today, and the track was playing really fast. No real matter what, we are taking a look at an extremely skilled horse that keeps improving, and be certain Bob Baffert can have him prepared for the Kentucky Derby. Governor Charlie is really a child of Midnight Lute out of Silverbulletway, by Storm Cat. He was foaled Feb 23, 2010 in Kentucky and was bred by his owner Mike Pegram. His record now stands at 3-2-1-0 with lifetime earnings of $444,800. It would be nice to own a minumum of one more battle on him before the Derby, with only three career starts, but with only six days left, which will be impossible.
